If you’re anywhere near social media this week, you know the kids are back to school. This time of year when there is a noticeable crisp in the morning air, pumpkin spice everything filling the shelves, and our partners all managing fantasy football teams, it’s important to remember that back to school isn’t just for the kids. If you’ve been thinking of going back to school yourself, you’re not alone.

Approx. 40% of post-secondary students are adults returning to school to further their education which is a pretty impressive number. In this new world of accessibility, many are choosing virtual learning at schools from every corner of the map.

If you are thinking about returning to school, here are a few things you should keep in mind and consider before enrolling:

  • DO THE RESERCH: make sure you know your options, speak to others who’ve gone back to college, and meet with admissions counselors.
  • CONNECT: reach out to people who have the education you’re chasing. LinkedIn is a great tool to connect with professionals in the field you’re interested in and can provide great insight.
  • FINANCES: going back to school can be expensive, but don’t let that deter you from continuing your education. There are loans, financial assistance, and grants you can apply for, even as an adult. An admissions counselor can help you with tuition plans, financial aid and scholarships. Make sure to ask whether you’re eligible for “life experience” credit.
  • Set a monthly household budget. In additional to regular monthly expenses, be sure to include tuition, books and college-related incidentals. (we’ll count parties in there too, you’re never too old to drink from a keg!)
  • Purchase a paper or electronic calendar. Block out anything and everything that’s set in stone, including work hours, family commitments, social obligations and class time.
  • Decide how many hours a week you will need to study. Schedule study time on your calendar—and then stick to the schedule.
  • Have a family meeting to talk about how going back to college will affect everyone. Delegate as many household responsibilities as possible, such as meals, errands and chores.

Going back to school as an adult with responsibilities can be hard, but not impossible. Never stop learning and make sure you’re having fun!
