Spice Girl Mel B is set to receive an honorary doctorate for her charity work supporting survivors of domestic abuse. Mel B, whose real name is Melanie Brown, will be honoured by Leeds Beckett University at a ceremony next month.

In her 2018 memoir, Brutally Honest, the musician detailed her own experiences with domestic violence.

Brown separated from her ex-husband Stephen Belafonte in 2018 after ten years of marriage. She later engaged in a legal battle with Belafonte, alleging that he had been abusive and had threatened to release a sex tape to ruin her career. Belafonte’s legal team called her allegations “outrageous and unfounded.”

In recent years, Brown has been outspoken about domestic abuse, partnering with Women’s Aid for a powerful campaign video in 2021. “It’s every woman’s story, it’s everybody’s voice, because we are dealing with an epidemic,” she told Good Morning Britain.
