Once one of the most popular groups in the late 80s to becoming a punchline of every joke by the early 90s, Milli Vanilli are getting their story told in an upcoming biopic produced by LEONINE Films. The movie is still in production and expected to wrap in December.

We got our first look at Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali who are starring as the duo.

Milli Vanilli, two German dancers we know as Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, scaled the heights of Good Rockin’ Tonight with hits like Blame It On The Rain, I’m Gonna Miss You and Girl You Know It’s True, which the movie is named after, until they were caught lip-synching, and the truth came out that they never actually sang on any of the songs they were credited for. Milli Vanilli won a Grammy for ‘Best New Artist’ (which was later retracted) and for their album Girl You Know It’s True. In interviews that followed, their thick German accents were detected in interviews, while their songs were perfect English leading people to speculate that the group might not be the singers we’re hearing.

On July 21,1989, Milli Vanilli performed at an MTV event in front of 80,000 people when their backing track for Girl You Know It’s True started skipping during the chorus. In 2022, it’s not uncommon for singers to lip-sync – it happens all the time now at award shows, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and more, but in 1989, this was a scandal that made headlines all over the world and signaled the beginning of the end for Milli Vanilli.

Girl You Know It’s True will star Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali as Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, from what we’ve heard, we’ll get to see the story of the duo rising to fame and their downfall after July 21, 1989. We’ll update as we get more on the biopic. In the meantime, let’s remember Milli Vanilli at their peak.
